Legacy hosts local students for “Kids for President”

Inspiring Young Minds: The "Kids for President" Performance Captivates Tri-State Area Students

Nearly 800 area students attended a free performance of "Kids for President" at The Legacy Theater in Carthage on Friday, Oct. 4. The show, presented by Child's Play Touring Theatre of Chicago, was based on ideas submitted by children, showcasing what they would do as president. It also included ideas from local students, which were submitted as part of a curriculum provided to participating schools in advance of the performance.

Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

Honoring Student Contributions

The "Kids for President" performance was a unique opportunity for students to have their voices heard and their ideas recognized. Several students whose ideas were incorporated into the show were honored on stage with the performers. These young visionaries included Mesa Kohl, Adley Rose, Kaylie Powell, Wyatt Johnson, and Lena Primmer, fifth-graders at Nauvoo-Colusa Elementary School; Aimee Childs, Addison Squire, and Allison Siegworth, third-graders at Nauvoo-Colusa Elementary School; and Parker Tucker, Brielle Heidbreder, and Sienna DeSotel, fifth-graders at Dallas City Elementary School. This recognition not only celebrated their creativity but also inspired other students to engage with the political process and share their own ideas for improving their communities and the country.

Exploring the Role of the President

The comical and musical "Kids for President" show provided an engaging and educational experience for the students. Through the performance, they learned about the process of voting, the responsibilities of the president, and the importance of balancing diverse opinions and needs. By presenting these complex topics in a relatable and entertaining manner, the show encouraged students to think critically about the role of the president and how they could potentially contribute to the political landscape.

Amplifying Student Voices

As part of the curriculum, students were given the opportunity to write letters to the President, expressing their thoughts on the most important issues facing American children. These letters offered a glimpse into the concerns and priorities of the next generation of leaders. From addressing the high cost of living to advocating for environmental protection and age limits on social media, the students demonstrated a keen awareness of the challenges facing their peers and a desire to make a positive impact.

Fostering Civic Engagement

The "Kids for President" performance was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Ramsey Financial, as well as grants from the Tracy Family Foundation, the Community Foundation of West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri, the United Way of the Great River Region, and the Illinois Arts Council. This collaborative effort ensured that the show was accessible to students from a wide range of schools, including those from Dallas City, Nauvoo-Colusa, Hamilton, Keokuk, Iowa, and area homeschooled families, as well as Carthage and Southeastern elementary schools.

Inspiring Imaginations and Fostering Civic Engagement

The "Kids for President" performance is the first in an "Inspiring Imaginations" series of free shows at The Legacy Theater, designed to engage young people from the tri-state area with classic children's literature and topics relevant to their education and development. The series, which includes upcoming productions of "Winnie the Pooh," "Harriet Tubman: Road to Freedom," and "Alice in Wonderland," aims to spark the imagination and foster civic engagement among students from pre-K to eighth grade."This school series highlights classic children's literature and presents topics highly relevant for pre-K to eighth grade, with curriculum such as social studies and history," said Thomas Robbins, executive director of The Legacy Theater. "By collaborating with schools, we're able to schedule attendance and ensure that these transformative experiences are accessible to students across the region."The "Kids for President" performance and the broader "Inspiring Imaginations" series demonstrate a commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders and inspiring them to engage with the political process and their communities. Through these innovative programs, The Legacy Theater is not only entertaining young minds but also cultivating the critical thinking and civic engagement skills that will shape the future of our society.
